There’s a chance you could unknowingly have COVID-19 when you are vaccinated. Would that increase or decrease your chances of becoming seriously ill?

The good news is, there is no evidence indicating it will make you sicker (or less sick) if you have COVID-19 and get the vaccine. But it will very likely make the vaccine less effective if you get the shot when you are currently infected.

So, if you’re experiencing symptoms of illness, wait a week or so until you’re feeling better and then you can get vaccinated. It’s also best not to get other vaccines, like the flu shot, if you’re feeling sick, because it can impact that vaccine’s effectiveness.

If you’re under the weather, stay home. Because you want the COVID-19 vaccine to provide the maximum protection. And to protect the front-line clinicians who are administering it.
